How to Enjoy A Solo Tread

Treading water for an hour (or any period of time) might sound like a challenging task, especially if you’re doing it solo. But with the right strategies, you can turn this workout into an enjoyable and productive experience. Whether you’re looking to stay motivated, entertained, or simply make the most out of your exercise time, here’s how you can keep yourself engaged while treading water alone.

1. Listen to something with bluetooth, and water resistant headphones such as AirPods

Podcasts are a great way to keep your mind occupied while you work out. Whether you’re into true crime, personal development, comedy, or storytelling, there’s a podcast out there for you. Choose episodes that are long enough to cover the duration of your tread session, so you’re fully immersed in the content without interruption. I tread alone about once a week, and my personal favorite hour of entertainment is Armchair Anonymous. I hold off listening and save these episodes for my solo treads.

If you’re not into podcasts, try an audiobook or make a great song playlist.

2. Focus on Compelling Thoughts

Use your treading time for introspection and mental stimulation. Reflect on personal goals, brainstorm new ideas, visualize upcoming plans and projects, or give thought to what you are grateful for. This focused thinking can turn your workout into a productive session, where you not only stay physically active but also engage your mind.

3. Mix it up with some aqua-jogging or different tread technique

When you find yourself treading alone in a lane at the rec center (or sharing with a swimmer), it may be helpful to mix up the workout. You may try treading in place for 5 minutes, then aqua-jogging up and down the lane (to the point where the water gets too shallow) once or twice and repeat until your workout is complete. Aqua-jogging, especially while wearing weight, is challenging and works a different muscle group in your legs.

If you prefer to stay in place, you may try alternating intervals of frog kick treading and scissor kick treading.

OR take a completely different approach, and challenge yourself to get deep into thought, focus on your podcast, people-watch, and see how long you can go without checking the time.

Treading water alone for an hour doesn’t have to be monotonous or daunting. With the right combination of music, podcasts, compelling thoughts, and challenges, you can make your workout session both enjoyable and productive. By staying engaged and motivated, you’ll turn your treading routine into a rewarding experience that benefits both your body and mind. So, gear up, hit the water, and make your solo treading sessions something you look forward to!
